What exactly is non diabetic hypoglycemia?
Timmy asked:
A while back i was diagnosed with hypoglycemia via blood test that took some hours. I was quite young at the time of the test and wasnt really intrested in the results cause i was young. Now i know that most of us on answers are no where near qualified as doctors. So i would like only experianced people to answer this question. Either people who have ‘non diabetic hypoglycemia’ or no some one that has it and understand it better than I. All i know so far is that its a drop in blood sugar due to skipping meals or not eating a healthy diet. I also know that side effects are tiredness, dizzyness, headaces, nausea, weakness and hunger with many other small symptoms. I do experiance them when i do not eat for a while. But ibwant to know more on how this disorder works. I asked my doctor about it, then i got worried i had diabetes or something. He said i was healthy cause he took a blood test a out a year and a half ago, and i did not have diabetes. Besides im rather slim person and to young to have type 2 diabetes and if i had type 1 i would be in a coma by now. So i just want ideas on how to control hypoglycemia so i dont feel tired and hungry all the time.
wow. Thanks for the answers. All jave helpped me out alot in understanding this condition. So i guess i am not the only one that get called drunk or high. When i dont eat my friends think im drunknor high. Lol. Thanks for the advice!

Non diabetic hypoglycemia is just that it means you have low blood sugar, It is really non threatening you experience dizziness, fatigue and sometimes on rare occasions fogging of vision. I have had this problem for years I don’t take and medicine for it because there is none. What you need to do is to eat regular meals and a small snack at night. But if you feel dizziness setting in the grab a candy bar, or some chips just some thing to boost you calorie intake and to get a insulin flow going again. It doesn’t matter if you feel hungry you need to eat regular meals. Are you a very active person. If so then you will need to watch calorie intake more then some one who isn’t active because you will burn food and calories off faster.
I hope I have helped you in some way.

Okay well Hypoglycemia is not diabetes – it is low blood sugar which is the opposite of diabetes. However, diabetics can experience Hypoglycemia from too much insulin/oral medication or skipping meals but it is not naturally occurring in diabetes.
You don’t “treat” hypoglycemia with anything other than just being sure to have regular meals with carbs or a snack when you feel low. Its not a disease, just a tendency for your blood sugar to run low giving you the tired, dizzy and sometimes “drunken” feeling.
I normally have high blood sugar because of my diabetes, but since I manage it with diet, exercise and insulin sometimes I can take a bit too much insulin and then my sugar drops too low. I know that hypo feeling and its not fun. Can you see the difference? For me its more “self induced” or error on my part for having too much insulin in my system or not eating a meal after taking meds. But for you it happens naturally and on a regular basis. You don’t have diabetes, and if you did your blood sugars would run extremely high.
Learn about your carbs and how to balance your meals. Sure sugary snacks work great when you are feeling low cause they quickly bring up your sugar levels, however it won’t stay in your system long. Starchy foods like potatoes, pasta, beans, rice etc… have more complex carbs which stay in your system longer keeping your blood sugars up for a longer period of time. Candy fruits and sodas will peak quickly and then drop back down.

Hypoglycemia is the OPPOSITE of diabetes. Hypoglycemia is LOW blood sugar.
“Non-Diabetic Hypoglycemia” is low blood sugar that is caused by a poor diet. Simply put — you don’t eat enough. this is most often found in pubescent girls. During puberty, girls often put on fat “in all the right places” — this is why girls get “curvy”.
But young girls are often blinded by the “Hollywood image” that leads them to believe that they must be skinny to be beautiful. So it is VERY common for young girls to have eating problems — anexoria and bulemia. But even normal girls will try to “diet” by skipping meals, or eating food portions that are WAY too small.
What happens is that your doby “run out of fuel”. you NEED some sugar in your system to let your body run. if you do not eat enough, you “run out of gas”. You feel weird, dizzy, nervous, and disoriented. you may have vision problems, and your friends might think that youa re drunk or “on drugs”. if you do not get something to eat SOON, you will pass out. if you do not receive medical treatment, you could go into a coma and die.
But the TREATMENT for this is easy, and FUN — EAT MORE! Make sure that you are eating a proper diet that provides plenty of calories to get you through the day, but not so many calories that you get fat. This is a real juggling act for teenagers going through puberty, because they are SUPPOSED to put on weight, but even boys think they should be skinny.
“Diabetic Hypoglycemia” is caused when a diabetic takes too much medicine, exercises too muich, or does not eat enough. in this case the MEDICINE is causing the problem, but the effects are the same — Feeling weird, dizzyness, nervousness, and eventually loss of consciousness and possible coma and death.
And the treatment is the same — EAT SOMETHING! This is the ONLY time that a diabetic MUST eat sugar. Many diabetics keep Glucose Tablets (sugar pills) with them for just such emergencies.
based on your body description, it is doubtful that you have diabetes. So what you need to do is enjoy life a little more, and EAT! Don’t go to extremes, stay away from junk food, but eat MORE of the things you like. YOU need to keep your blood sugar UP (to normal). A diabetic needs to keep their DOWN to normal.
