My brother in law has come to stay and he is diabetic – I need help with the diet?

Question by Warrior Maid: My brother in law has come to stay and he is diabetic – I need help with the diet?
He is morbidly obese and in less than one week has consumed 4 loaves of bread, 10 pints of milk, 4 bottles of squash, at least 5 bottles of diet coke, at least 12 bags of crisps…… the list goes on. He eats and eats and does no exercise. We are quite healthy, very balanced diet, mainly vegetarian, nothing processed…. to my mind what he eats is unheathy and bad for his condition – what should he eat/drink?

He should really see a nutritionist. I have someone similar in my family. Every time he comes over I make sure I fix meals that are extremely low in salt & sugar. I don’t leave candy laying around & rarely serve dessert- unless I get it from the Diabetes cookbook. It’s sad because he also smokes 2 packs of cigarettes per day… My family is mainly vegan (I am not) & all of us are very healthy weight, we all exercise daily etc. Telling him probably won’t do anything (we’ve tried)… Pick up on a Diabetic cookbook, some recipes are actually normal just low sugar/salt etc.

What kind of diet do you have to follow when you’re diabetic?

Question by chloe: What kind of diet do you have to follow when you’re diabetic?
My father in law is type 2diabetic. His doctor has told him not to eat any simple carbohydrates. He’s only allowed to eat meat and vegetables, and as a result, he’s lost a lot of weight, and he keeps on losing.
Is it necessary for him to be on such a strict diet? Any suggestion on anything else he could eat, possibly with higher calories?
Please I’d like advice from people who have experience on the subject. T
Thanks in advance.
He is 5’5, and 140pounds. He’s lost about 20pounds or more.

Does anyone have any advice for me with my toddler’s new onset type 1 diabetes?

Question by Pet: Does anyone have any advice for me with my toddler’s new onset type 1 diabetes?
We just found out my 2 y/o, who will be 3 in December, has type 1 diabetes after her sugar was over 1,000 in bloodwork done for something completely different. We’ve spent 3 nights in the hospital and now we are at home managing it ourselves. I’m still not really over the initial shock but we are dealing with it and she is doing okay. Any advice or help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Especially snack suggestions. She asks for food constantly, like she is starving. It makes me feel horrible that I can’t just feed her.

It is tough to be the mother of a diabetic child, my daughter was diagnosed at age 12, long after she had developed her eating habits. I am sure you have met with a nutritionist and have written information and guidelines to follow. Carb counting is the key and lots of things work as a “free” 1 carb unit snack, a container of yogurt, fruit, a glass of milk, some prepackaged units will equal about 1 unit, try lighter versions of drinks, Capri Sun has one, meat of course if totally free, try slices of lunch meat or cheese. Good luck this takes time and patience.

Question by kelleygaither2000: Can a yeast infection,along w/other symptoms,be indicative of Type 2 Diabetes?
I went for my yearly physical, and my doc said that an infection I had, along w/other factors, led her to test me for type 2 diabetes. When my dad was diagnosed,it was a yeast infection that led them to test for it. Is a yeast infection, along w/other symptoms,a valid reason to check for type 2 diabetes?

Best answer:

Answer by TheOrange Evil
High blood sugar not only makes any type of infection more likely, but can also result in a slower healing time. You didn’t say what the other factors were, but chronic yeast infections can be grounds to test for diabetes, as can your genetic risk.

Use your diabetes meal plan. If you do not have one, ask your health care team about one.
Eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, fish, lean meats, chicken or turkey without the skin, dry peas or beans, whole grains, and low-fat or skim milk and cheese.
Keep fish and lean meat and poultry portion to about 3 ounces (or the size of a deck of cards). Bake, broil, or grill it.
Eat foods that have less fat and salt.
Eat foods with more fiber such as whole grains cereals, breads, crackers, rice, or pasta.
Get 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. Brisk walking is a great way to move more.
Stay at a healthy weight by using your meal plan and moving more.
Ask for help if you feel down. A mental health counselor, support group, member of the clergy, friend, or family member who will listen to your concerns may help you feel better.
Learn to cope with stress. Stress can raise your blood glucose. While it is hard to remove stress from your life, you can learn to handle it.
Stop smoking. Ask for help to quit.
Take medicines even when you feel good. Ask your doctor if you need aspirin to prevent a heart attack or stroke. Tell your doctor if you cannot afford your medicines or if you have any side effects.
Check your feet every day for cuts, blisters, red spots, and swelling. Call your health care team right away about any sores that do not go away.
Brush your teeth and floss every day to avoid problems with your mouth, teeth, or gums
Check your blood glucose. You may want to test it one or more times a day. Use the card at the back of this booklet to keep a record of your blood glucose numbers. Be sure to take this record to your doctor visits.
Check your blood pressure if your doctor advises.
Report any changes in your eyesight to your doctor.

The first cause of teenage obesity is the kind of food that teenagers eat. It is a well known fact that teenagers love junk food, but these foods are very rich in fats, oil and cholesterol. This inadvertently harms the system of the teenagers, and this ends up in the individual becoming obese. With the vast expansion of fast food chains around the country today, it is no surprise that this is the single biggest cause.

The next factor that leads to teenage obesity is the lack of physical exercise. With the advancements in the computer world, and especially the video games industry, more and more teenagers choose to sit in at home and play with their gadgets. This lifestyle habit has led to the birth of the term ‘couch potato’. This ultimately results in a total lack of exercise, and the teenager thus starts living a sedentary lifestyle. Both these factors combined, have led to the drastic rise in the levels of teenage obesity in the country.

Some of the possible dangers of teenage obesity are as follows.
Increased danger of heart diseases.
High cholesterol levels in the body.
High blood pressure levels.
Greater possibility of contracting Type 2 diabetes.
Social discrimination resulting in lowered self esteem.
Teenagers who are obese are more likely to be obese in their adulthood as well, and this increases the chances of serious heart conditions and other disorders in the future. Adopting weight loss methods as soon as possible is something that should be paid attention to.

The best way to prevent or reduce teenage obesity is to ensure that the individual gets plenty of physical exercise. Visiting the gym on a regular basis, or taking up a sport is the best way to achieve this. If this is not possible, then even something as simple as talking a walk everyday, or going for a jog everyday, will be extremely beneficial. The prevention of teenage obesity can only occur by putting an end to a sedentary lifestyle.

This also involves eating a healthy diet and a balanced diet. Consuming fruits and vegetables will aid in the purification of the system. The biggest responsibility of the parents is to ensure that the child does not spend an excessive amount of time on the computer, or playing video games, since this is one of the biggest contributors to teenage obesity.

Battling the possibility of teenage obesity is something that needs to be done over the course of a teenagers life, and this also helps prevent childhood obesity. In spite of this, it is never too late to start living a healthy life, and ensuring that teenagers do not fall into this trap.

Hope this helps.
