Question about gestational diabetes and glucose tolerance test?

failingsanity22 asked:

Well hello everyone And good morning! I just had a question about the glucose testing for gestational diabetes. I called my doctors office to get my results and She said my fasting level was fine/normal. But that she wasn’t too sure about my tolerance level. She said it was just a little high, but that to her (im not sure if she was a secretary/nurse) but said that she would leave it out for my doctor to take a look at if he hadnt already since there was no notes left for me in my file. Anyways my glucose tolerance level was 5.4.

The thing is my doctor told me to wait 8hrs when I asked how long to fast for. Ive just read a little online about it and it says your suppose to fast for 12 hours….. And Since ive had an infected wisdom tooth I was sleeping weird hours too deal with the pain, i woke up at 1am and drank a sprite and granola bar :( So I actually fasted for 7hrs. And the Woman who took my blood for the tolerance result only waited 45-50 minutes before she took my blood the second time. (it was almost lunch hour). Anyways so She didnt even wait the full hour.

Should I be concerned (ive never had high glucose levels before, however i do know woman can just develop them later on).

Just wondering either way is 5.4 a little high? Especially since I was told to wait 8hrs not the 12hrs it says online from the diabetes ***.??
and it mine was with the 50g of glucose not the 100 Or more.

How often should people at risk for diabetes get tested?

Vehicular Manslaughter asked:

I’m not diabetic or overweight, and I do my best to eat a healthy diet. However, the one BIG risk factor I have is that my father has it, and it tends to run in my family.

I’ve had normal BS levels as long as I could remember now, and so far have had no symptoms. I monitor my fasting blood sugar on my own about every month or two(using my father’s equipment) and get it checked during my annual physical. Is this enough to monitor it properly, or am I doing something wrong?

Also, any advice on delaying the onset of diabetes as far as I can? I’m already trying to be active, keeping my weight in check and eating healthy, but is there anything else I can do? I plan on enlisting in the military in a few years, so I need to be in my top condition.

Diabetic kidney pain?

Morgana asked:

My husband is a type 2 diabetic and was diagnosed about 2 years ago. Originally he took both glyburide & glucophage. After about a year (and losing 65 pounds) he was taken off the glyburide. He is doing exceptionally well and I haven’t seen ANY blood test number go over 137 in approximately 9 months.
The only thing that bothers him is approx. every couple of weeks or so, he’ll get low to medium kidney aching. This will last for 2-4 days and then go away. We notice no rise in blood sugar levels during this time and he always drinks more than enough water so he isn’t dehydrating.
Does anyone have an idea about the kidney pain? Is it possible that he doesn’t need the glucophage anymore and that using is it causing kidney overwork? I do understand that we need to get him back to the doctor, but currently don’t have insurance, so any thoughts/ideas from the good folks out there would be appreciated.
He is 39, 6′ 4″, and currently weighs 245 lbs. He takes (1) 500mg glucophage per day.

Who do I go see if I suspect I have hypoglycemia?

justasc asked:

I would like to know what kind of a specialist I should go see to be tested for hypoglycemia. Should I just go see an endocrinologist??

FYI: I’m not diabetic or overweight. Some medical concerns have been raised and I would like to go see a specialist in the area rather than just a general practitioner. Thanks!

Could I have diabetes or not?

Jennifer S asked:

I don’t know too much about diabetes type 2. I was tested around 6 years ago and it was negative. I am 20 and 118 pounds. Right now I am always thirsty. I am also tired. I can barely make it past 10 pm and I don’t sleep well. No one in my immediate family has it but 2 of my grandparents and 1 of my aunts do. I just want to know if it could be or not. or if I can get some more info.
