ginger8482 asked: Type 1 diabetes runs in my family (2 uncles). I’ve been sick for about a month: extreme fatigue, headaches, nausea, dizziness, irritability. I also feel feverish frequently. At first i thought I was pregnant, but tested negative. I had a very short (2days) period as well. Today I noticed that my urine smells very strong; I almost can’t stand to smell in myself! Do you think I’m diabetic, or is there another ailment with similar symptoms?

GA Peaches asked: We don’t have the funds for him to go to the doctor every six months for his diabetic testing and we don’t have the funds to buy his insulin! It’s very expensive! I’m scared and don’t know where to get help! It appears that we don’t qualify for anything. I’m on unemployment due to being laid off, my husbands had a huge pay cut, we have two in college. Where can we get help with my husbands diabetes medical care? does anyone know?

Cate asked: Another diabetes question!
First of all let me just say that Mickey is under vet supervision and has been since she was diagnosed (well, she’s always had a vet obviously) so you don’t need to tell me to take her to the vet!
My question is this, Mickey is a 4.5kg (down from 8kg) Maine Coon female that I rescued who is 12 years old and is just completely lovely but she has diabetes. She’s been on Caninsulin (Vetinsulin in the USA) for approx 5 weeks. She started on 3 units twice a day then because her BG (blood glucose) wasn’t low enough at the nadir, she went up to 4 units and then for the same reason has been upped to 5 units but it would appear from her water consumption that her BG still isn’t under control. She’s back at the vets on Friday for another test (she’s been going weekly) so I’ll know for sure but has anyone else had such a hard time stabilising a diabetic cat on caninsulin? I’m storing the insulin correctly (fridge), doing the injections properly at the correct times, feeding her as per guidelines etc.
The other question I have is about Royal Canin for diabetics – this food is recommended for diabetic cats and it’s extremely low in carbs and high in protein but she likes plain tuna with it. The vet says this is OK (Science Diet MD made her stomach go bad) and I can’t imagine that it would affect the blood glucose levels but I can’t be sure.
I will say that Mickey is very bright and alert, is cleaning herself and has never ever in her whole life peed outside the litter box. We’ve also ruled out concurrent hyperthyroidism and her kidneys are in good shape.
So as I said, she’s back at the vets on Friday but I was just wanting to know if anyone else had this much trouble stabilising a diabetic cat. And I know cats are hard to stabilise on insulin.
Thanks!
Thanks for that. I’m aware of and frequent both sites. I don’t regard this as a ‘difficult’ time, it’s just something that needs to be done.
I am very educated on feline diabetes and as I said, am seeing a vet weekly but I want to hear from the owners of other diabetic cats re: their experiences stabilising their cats on insulin, especially Caninsulin (vetinsulin). But thanks!

Spazz asked: I’m 30 & I’ve been a T2 diabetic for 7 years now. My a1c’s have always been good but at one point I let taking care of it slide. Since I’m looking at having another baby in the next 2 years I want to make sure I had everything under control. I started seeing a very reputable endo. I got back to testing my blood sugars every day like I should & taking my meds (Metformin 1500 mg/day)
But I’m alarmed at my daily numbers. I’m RARELY below 200. Most often 200-300+. A big time fast might leave me around 150. But when I met with my endo a few weeks ago he said my a1c was only 6.4. I thought it’s impossible! But he said my fructosamine was about normal. He thinks I shouldn’t have readings as high as I do. He switched my Accu chek Aviva with a brand new meter & wants me to check using the new monitor. But I’m getting the same exact readings.
I’m worried with the real high #’s. Why might there be such a discrepancy? I’m SO tired all the time, sometimes unable to get out of bed! I want help!
My testing consists of three of the following each day:
first thing in the morning/before bfast
2 hrs after breakfast
before lunch
2 hrs after lunch
before dinner
2 hrs after dinner
bedtime
regardless of how I’m feeling. I did feel like I was way low once and tested and I was at 100. I just hope I’m not really that high all the time and my body now only recognizes 100 as being low. It used to be 30 is where I’d feel low.
My fingers are clean when I test and I’m getting similar readings from 2 monitors. Maybe it’s just the Aviva. But I’ve never had problems with monitors in the past.
I’ve been on insulin before and actually wouldn’t mind it again. I just want more control over my numbers. Besides if I’ll be getting pregnant again I’ll be on insulin anyways. I just found with insulin I feel better and have more energy. I don’t gain weight on insulin because I’m much more active! But my endo wants me to stay on 1500 mg Metformin. That’s where I’ve been for YEARS!

silly rabbit asked: I went to the doctor to get blood work a week ago, but saw a nurse practitioner instead.
the results finally came in- he said I had a glucose level of 87.
I didn’t trust these results because, well frankly, it is too much of a coincidence that I happen to have the symptoms for diabetes& it runs in my family (for example, my mom is “borderline” diabetic). So I bought a self test thing and been administering my own fasting tests. each morning, after fasting at least 12 hours, I have been getting 115-119mg/dl. I know the range for pre-diabetes is 100-126 after fasting. What is going on here? I know the combo pill can cause the glucose level to go up, but does that mean I have pre-diabetes? When the nurse practitioner, who btw would not listen to be about anything, did the test, it was the day before my period, which means, i was off the pill for 2 days.
i’m “normally” on the pill. (2 yrs now)
I have many of the symptoms/ complications of type 2 diabetes
what kind of dr. could i talk to
I am not a hypochondriac, thank you very much.
Thanks to all of you who left real answers.

chelsea c asked: I was feeling a little tired, dizzy, and all of a sudden my vision blurred. Someone in my family is diabetic and has a blood testing device. I checked my blood sugar and it was 145. Is that ok. I have been checked for gestational diabetes, my test came out like 108, I know that is normal, but I am afraid things may have changed since then.

PNSIM asked: My doctor just called me after doing a blood test and said I have a high blood sugar. I had eaten heavily and went to the doctor’s office for a different purpose and suddenly he decided to do a blood test to check for my sugar. The blood sample was taken 1 and half hours after lunch and it came up as 122. Why is he saying this is high? I was thinking 122 was normal for a non-fasting state(Should not normal values be 65 to 139 for non-fasting??? ) …. Is it something I need to worry about. I hope I am not diabetic !!
Forgot to mention !! I am @ 4 months post-partum. Please note, this is NOT A FASTING READING …
