Do you have the option of getting COBRA insurance through his employer? You did not say who had the insurance coverage thru (his work, yours?) It's expensive but may be an option, but you need to check on it quickly as you have a limited amount of time to sign up.

Call a free clinic, and ask what options he has thru them. See what faith based groups in your area may be able to help by referring you to an agency that provides discounted or free medicine. (Many churches support free clinics and other health organizations). Call where you normally get the drugs from, and ask them for advice. If you call enough people, you will get in touch w/ the people you need.

Your children may need to be responsible for their own educational costs until things turn around. It is great that you want to pay for them, but your health comes first. There are scholarships and financial aid for students - there are no scholarships for illness, insurance or retirement.

Don't think of this as charity. When you are back on your feet, you can help an agency that helped you.

Go to your local senator or congressman's office. The folks there know a little about everything. They may be able to help you find a program to pay for your husband's medication. Also, you can contact the pharmaceutical companies that produce the products he uses, they may offer him free or discounted supplies. I called the maker of Novolog to get a discount for my son. All the products he uses have an 800 number somewhere. Call your husband's endocrinologist and explain the situation and ask if he/she knows any programs to apply for.

Good luck!

Hubby's health has to be your top priority. That might mean letting one or both of the boys pay for their own education. Medicaid and other welfare programs are not the answer. You need to find a job and your husband has to find one that pays more than he is making now. If you're lucky one of those jobs will offer health insurance.

Hello GP peaches and Family,

I am a Registered Nurse with thirty years experience in Hospital Nursing and Hospital Management. My full profile can be read at:

I am an advocate of a National Health Service for the US just like all the other industrialized countries. I have written three articles on this issue. However, your need is most immediate. Please go to the ER of your hospital and tell them exactly what you have written here. They will treat your husband, they are required to. If they do not then email me with the name of the Hospital and the person you spoke with.

Things to remember: They will treat you and then bill you. If you cannot pay they will take you to court. In court you can make your case. The judge may order you to pay a sum which you can afford each month.

Some people will tell you and your husband to find a job. This implies that you are not already looking for a job. I hope this is not true.

As a last choice you can go to the church and seek help.

Contact the Diabetes Assn in your area and explain your situation. Sometimes they have or know of where funds are available

Good Luck.

You need to tell your boys that you can no longer fund their college educations. They can find jobs and go part-time. Your situation has changed and you need to take care of yourselves. You can help with your sons' educations again if things get better for you financially. His health has to take precedence.
