Just diagosed Type 2 Diabetic. QUESTON?
there is a happily ever after asked:
I’m 27, Native American and 366 pounds. I had a pregnancy 2 years ago and I was gestational diabetic then. I recently have been diagnosed with Type 2. My A1C was 8. My blood sugars for the last 3 months tested 270. I have been getting all kinds of conflicting info! I am now on a diet. This is the longest I have ever stayed on one. I am sticking to it! I am on Metformin 500 mg and aspirin. This is the question. If I lose weight, and stick to the diet, is there a possibility that the diabetes will go away?
I’m so afraid of dying from this condition. I almost wonder if its even worth it too live with this, even if I gain control I will always be diabetic and continue to break down on the inside right? So whats the point of putting up with this? I have so many thoughts and anxietys about this. I don’t know what to do.

It is possible as long as you change your diet; this means staying away from carbohydrates such as white bread, flour, corn products, low fat diet, moderate exercise and etc. You would probably have to get down to 165lbs in order to reverse your diabetes. Hang in there and be patient but make an honest effort to lose the weight.
diabetic testing
It won’t really go “away”, BUT if you lose the weight and keep eating healthy, there is the possibilityy that you can control it with the diet and exercising and not have to take the Metformin any more. Aspirin has nothing to do with it.
I would recommend losing the weight anyway for overalll health benefits. Breathing, cholesteral, lifespan, energy, etcetera. Good luck to and best of health to you and yours.

YES yes yes! I have known many people, including my own sister who had type 2 diabetes (also triggered as gestational diabetes) and completely and totally reversed it. She had gone so far she was on insulin and had been diagnosed as diabetic over ten yrs and now she takes nothing. It isn’t easy, but it can be done. Don’t listen or take heed of any doctor that tells you it can’t be cured because I swear on my life I have seen type 2 diabetes completely resolved by a change in diet and exercise. For Native Americans, I believe there is a group out there that can educate you on a way of eating that is more similar to your natural heritage diet and it has had great results. But in the meantime, no sugar, and cut way back on the carbs. Good luck and good for you sticking to your diet with no cheating. The metformin is practically useless but it is what you have for now. Google about Native American diabetic diet and you may find the group. They were basically encouraging a diet of veggies and lean beef.

Ok, last questions first! We do not die of diabetes or high glucose levels. We die of heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, but not diabetes.
It is too worth it to live! There are thousands of us fighting the high glucose levels. You can do it too.
I do know how depressing this is and then too, you have small children so you must be active!
I follow the South Beach Living phase 2 food plan and have for more than 20 years. It is very low carb, sufficient protein and fat. You can lose weight on it along with chasing small children around the area. I walk an hour each day as fast as I can. The milage builds with time.
The diabetes will never go away, but you can gain control of the glucose levels and your weight.
I am a grandmother who would rather sit on the floor weaving than going for a walk!!! But knowing I must walk every day, I resist the urge to just sit and weave. Learn weaving! It is so meditative and you can just work all your frustrations and depressions away making baskets or blankets and rugs.
Put a picture of your babies on the fridge and work hard to live to see their children! Yes, It is so worth the efforts!

if you are obese and you lose your excess weight it is possible to get back to normal.
what you should do is this: watch your diet carefully and walk briskly for 30-60 minutes a day, not jogging or running just walking briskly.
also eat more plain salads – like tomato cucumber and onion chopped and lightly salted, even though that makes your sugar go up a little – it goes down quickly also
you will feel much better and healthier.
also avoid fat/oily food as much as possible and do not have potato or bread as that will get your sugar level out of control

it won’t “go away”
you may be able to get to the point where your blood sugars are normal, but that’s the goal of any diabetic. that doesn’t mean you’re cured. it means you have excellent control.
as far a diabetes killing you, it doesn’t kill anyone. it’s the complications that do people in. you greatly cut your risk of complications by sticking to the plan that your healthcare team gives you.
It sounds like you’re off to a good start. keep up with the diet and exercise, see your doctor regularly. there’s absolutely no reason you can’t live a long and healthy life.
