Is smoking three to four cigarettes a day is harmful for a diabetic person?

cookaburra asked:

I have been diagnosed as a diabetic just a month ago. My fasting blood sugar when I took the test nearely 15 days before was 133mg/dl. I do smoke four to five cigarettes a day.

I do gulp 20 fenugreek seeds with water three to four times a day. I do not take any medicines but do workout on the treadmill and do some yoga like deep breathing and forceful exhalation.

Is this fine?? I do feel fit most of the time of the day.

Smoking is bad for anyone, diabetic or otherwise, but you do smoke less than a typical “smoker”. I would advise you to stop altogether.

Yes, smoking is harmful. But you knew that already right?

  4. diabetic testing

I really don’t see the point of smoking 4 or 5 cigarettes a day. That’s like saying I smoke ***** once every 2 months. Smoking is not good for anyone and if you’re only smoking 4 or 5 a day now, I suggest you stop now before your habit increases to 15 – 25 a day.

Cigarettes don’t affect diabetes, but if you want diabetes, lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease, then keep puffin.

to answer your question, smoking doesn’t directly affect your diabetes — however, it does cause other complications that in combination with complications of poorly managed diabetes will be more harmful vs a non smoker. Its like stacking the odds against you. For example Diabetes and smoking increases your chances of heart attack or stroke – but when you put the two together your chances increase that much more.

I was a “social” smoker and only went through a pack a week if that, but I quit when I started taking my diabetes seriously. I had enough issues to worry about with my blood sugars that I didn’t need to worry about smoking related complications.

Not directly, no. So far as I know, nicotine does NOT raise blood sugar.

But here’s the problem with diabetes and smoking — you will “feel” fine most o the time, but them suddenly !!!WHAM!!! you get hit with a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure.

the problem is diabetes damages EVERYTHING in your body — heart, lungs, brain, eyes, nerves, even your *** organs.

And smoking ALSO damages just about everything, but ESPECIALLY your heart, lungs, and brains. So you are doing double damage (at least — if not more) when you smoke and are diabetic.

And diabetics often need lots of surgeries – like amputations, heart bypasses, and kidney replacements. Smoking makes surgery MUCH worse, and in many cases impossible. For example, it IS possible that a doctor could reject your request for a heart bypass, stent, or kidney transplant because you are a smoker. your chances of dying “on the table” are MUCH greater, and they simply don’t want to pay the insurance for your sorry ****.

Diabetes canNOT be cured, but smoking CAN. the sooner you stop smoking, the sooner you will start to heal inside, and the better your chances will be of actually surviving being a diabetic.
