Is 250 a normal blood gloucose EVER for someone without diabetes?
Nam H. asked:
I had two gloucose home tests done after eating and they were both over 250. Is that normal Ever for a nondiabetic? After eating and waiting a few hours it was at 148. I also did a morning fast and that was at 93. Whats going on here? Is it possible to have a normal morning fast? and still be diabetic?

The fasting number (93) is normal, but the other numbers are not. Sounds likely that you’re diabetic.

If the testing was done right after you ate and the blood sugar has not leveled out, yet… It is normal if you ate something that instigates a spike in your insulin response.
Like something that is converted to sugar, like white flower products, soda pop, gatorade, or any snacky type processed food, even if it says “low fat” it will spike it if converted to sugar quickly by the body.
However, I would say that it’s awfully high, so you must be eating some kind of a starch that is causing an insulin response like that… Which will make you very hungry shortly thereafter.
If you want to try the home glucose test again after eating something like Ezekial bread (high fiber), then you will find it to be a lot lower. In fact, you will probably not be hungry for another 2 to 3 hours after you eat something more difficult to digest, which keeps your insulin response low and even.
Insulin is your fat hormone. So, eating anything that spikes it over again can cause Type 2 diabetes over years of time. If you wish to avoid this scenario, type in “Low Glycemic Eating Chart” in the google search engine and eat foods closest to their natural state to live a healthy long and lean life.

Your fasting blood sugar of 93 is in the normal range on the higher side. The “250″ is abnormal. Th only way a normal person could be anywhere near 250 is immediately after eating a huge number of calories. If the 250 was tested 2 hrs after a normal meal, as is the recommended time, then the number should have returned to the fasting value. It is NOW time to see your doctor for a controlled blood sugar testing to verify a possible diagnosis of early diabetes.

Doctor may test for diabetes if one has symptoms such as thirst, frequent urination, bladder infection, or vaginal yeast infection. Doctor will measure blood glucose level, and if it is 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) or higher, then you have diabetes and no further testing is necessary. If your glucose level is less than 200 mg/dl, then additional tests may be necessary.

the 250 was taken how long after eating?? and what did you eat at that time?
Normally glucose returns to normal in about 2 hours for normal people. a few hours and still at 148 is a sign of problems.
Morning fasting numbers don’t mean much at all. The liver can decide around 2 or 3 am that you are starving to death and dump a lot of stored glucose on the system so you have a high level. But yours was in the normal range.
I think you should make an appointment for a complete physical with blood analysis. All you have to say is you are concerned with your health and want to make sure it is in correct state. If you have relatives who are diagnosed as diabetic that is a strike against you. You are 20% more likely to develop it.
If you are a guy get your first PSA done now!!! You need a baseline on this.

A reading of 250 one hour into the test is a little high, but a reading of 93 in the morning and 148 two hours after drinking the glucose are within the normal range, near the upper end. You might want to watch you sugar intake and maintain a good exercise program, and monitor things every few years.
The upper limit on blood glucose following a meal is based on how quickly your bloodstream can absorb sugars and convert them to glucose – the pancreas, which controls blood glucose is not involved at first. So, blood glucose in a person with a healthy pancreas can have blood sugar levels spike to nearly 1000 for a short time if you drink a bunch of pop or eat candy on an empty stomach. This is what is done in a glucose tolerance test.
The difference between a diabetic or someone showing insulin resistance is how quickly the blood sugar levels drop. In a healthy person, the concentrations rapidly come under control in 45 minutes to an hour. In someone with diabetes, or insulin resistance, it make take 3 hours or more for blood levels to drop back down to pre-meal levels.

It’s normal to have spikes after eating, but 250 is high. It sounds like it came down nicely, though. Blood sugars normally fluctuate throughout the day, but keep a record and let your doctor know the levels. 93 is normal for a morning level. It takes a while to maintain good control. Keep accurate records so your doctor can see what’s happening and adjust your meds accordingly. Good luck to you.

To get an accurate reading you need to check your blood glucose before breakfast and two hours after a meal. Blood glucose goes up when a person eats, in non diabetics and also diabetics. It takes two hours for glucose to stablelize. You need to do this for several days to get a good idea of how your blood glucose is running.
250 is high for anyone. 148 is still too high after eating a few hours. Yes, it is possible to have a normal morning reading, because a person has been fasting all night. My husband and I are both type2 diabetics. Our blood sugar is completely normal in the mornings.
I would suggest you keep your reading and show your doctor. The doctor can run an A1C test, this will tell him your blood glucose level for the last three months.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
