If I found out I was type one diabetic at 8 weeks pregnant, what type was (1) before I became pregnant? ?

I love my two princesses!! asked:

Just curious, my doctor and my dietitians say I most likely had diabetes before I was pregnant. I had found out 5 yrs ago with my first pregnancy at 27 weeks, but It was pretty high by then. I believe they could have caught it sooner. My baby weighed 8′14. I tested for two years clear of diabetes. Then I stopped getting tested and sometime over the past 2-3 years I may have become a diabetic. When I became pregnant this time in jan 08., I was tested at 8 weeks and on the 3 hour, my readings were high enough to start insulin. The dietitians and the doctors said it was too early for my reading to be affected by the pregnancy. So, I am wondering what type may I have been before I became pregnant. I am 33 weeks along and getting along fine, no weight gain and sugars are controlled. They all have told me the diabetes will probably STICK to me this time. SO really two questions, what type did I have before and what type do you think I will have after the baby is born? Just curious.
family history—father type 1 (passed on), mother type two at 52, now 56, brother type 2 at 24, now 35.
my daughter is healthy, and second(baby in utero) daughter is healthy.

Wow you have a really strong family history of diabetes.

Do you mean you have gestational diabetes where you only have diabetes while pregnant, which can be controlled by diet, exercise and medication.

It is difficult to say whether you were type 1 or 2 as it can depend on your weight, if in the healthy weight range or under could be type 1, overweight is most likely type 2, or you may have had pre-diabetes and your pregnancy may have triggered the type 1 diagnosis, you may also have gestational diabetes which will go once you have had the baby.

I would hazard a guess that you had pre-diabetes and the pregnancy has tripped your body into diabetes. Hopefully it is gestational diabetes, but you will have to watch your weight, diet, sugar levels and maintain a good exercise program for life, as your most likely to end up with type 2 as you age.

Talk to your doctor and ask them for more information, or you can check the links below.

Good luck with baby and I sincerely hope that the diabetes goes once you have had your little girl.

Type 1 diabetes means that you are totally dependent on insulin (my late wife was type 1) She produced no insulin what so ever. She was dependent on shots for every meal.

Type 2 can have shots but here you make insulin and are insulin resistant. This one is diet controlled and when gets out of control pills may be given advanta (side effect weight gain) Metformin and many others help with the control.

gestational is the type that happens only when pregnant and many times means you will get it later in life if you are not careful with diet. usually goes onto type 2

To me it sounds like it must have been type 2 diabetes. If your pancreas is producing insulin at all, you’re a type 2. The kind you had with your first pregnancy was gestational diabetes, and that’s the kind that is associated with type 2 diabetes. So unless you had a virus that completely wiped out your pancreas, chances are you have slipped from gestational to type 2 diabetes.

I think it’s especially telling that your brother developed type 2 in his twenties. It definitely sounds like you inherited glucose intolerance. Type 1 is not inherited, just random.

Please make sure you are treated by an endocrinologist for diabetes. They (endocrinologists) are better trained than a family doc or internal medicine doc or ob/gyn. AND they would be much better qualified to answer your questions or make the above statements told to you by your physician (unless the above was said by an endocrinologist).

You were probably type 2.. 65% of women that have gestational diabetes develop type 2 later in life. You may have developed gestational diabetes with your first child and after that developed type 2. Type 2 is not insulin dependent like type 1, but many type 2’s take insulin. It does give better control. You will most likely have type 2 after your child is born.
