Gluclose Test.diabetes?

krmchl4@verizon.net asked:

I have my glucose test today…and am supposed to eat a normal meal 1 hour before (that would be at 12:45), and then drink the drink 1 hour before(at 1:45).
Can i drink hot chocolate now at 12? I am craving it?
Will it effect my results?
I have had only water today, and raisin bran crunch. then for lunch i am eating flavored noodles.
Wouldn’t they tell me to limit my sugar, or fast longer if anything was going to effect the test?

You should be fine, but call your lab to ask them.

I probably wouldnt, just because it is high in sugar so it might effect your test. I drank a dr pepper a couple hours before my 1 hr glucose test and I failed so I had to go back and do the 3 hour glucose test and I passed that one.

I would probably avoid the hot cocoa. For two reasons…one if it somes from a packet (like the instant) it can have a lot of extra sugar and may throw off your results. Two…it has a little caffiene in it and I know that they don’t want you having that before the test.

Take it with you and chug a huge cup just as soon as your done with your test!!

    Good luck!!

eat normal. That does not mean have a candy bar or pancakes, but just eat as if you would normally eat. If you can try to eat 2 hours before your test. If you fail this one you will have to go for the fasting one and it’s a 3 hour test.

If your results come back questionable, you will have to a 3-hour test.

Your drink is probably a thick orange syrup. Think orange soda, without the carbonation.

I think you would be ok on the hot chocolate now. it is far enough out that you blood sugar should be back to normal before you drink the glucose.

That’s weird, because I was told not to eat anything after midnight before my test. I would definitely not drink hot chocolate, because that will without a doubt affect your test.

My suggestion – don’t do it.

I had to go back and do the three hour test. It *****!!! You have to get your blood drawn 4 times in three hours. It’s not worth it.

They want you to eat like you normally do so they can get an accurate reading of what your blood sugar normally is.

Don’t worry about eating too much sugar if that is what you normally eat. For instance: If you normally eat a lot of sugar and you stop before the test then they will not get an accurate reading of what your level normally is. It also works visa versa: if you normaly don’t eat a lot of sugar and you do before the test that will throw it off also. I hope that made sense.

It is normal to check glucose levels during pregnancy (I’m guessing because that is what section this is in) because you could have gestational diabetes where you just have it while you are pregnant.

The fasting and 3 hr tests evereyone else is talking about is for checking for normal Diabetes. Do not worry about fasting or any of that other stuff unless that is what your doctor told you to do.
