Question by lovin’ spoonful: Can you give me some good ideas/practices for pre-diabetic diet?
I have been recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. My doctor wants me to go on 1600 calorie ADA diet plan. I have been doing alot of reading online – ADA website and other diabetes websites. Still I really could use some input and ideas from others with this condition.
I’m not over weight. For years I have avoided eating bad carbs – I have done both Atkins and South Beach Diet in the past. I thought Atkins was really terrible and basically unhealthy. South Beach is a much more practical and healthy approach – but in reality does not differ much from what ADA suggest.

My father is diabetic – so genetically proned to this condition – even though maintain good eating habits and have an active life.

Best answer:

Answer by Miz Lamb
the ADA diet plan is a total joke! It is merely smaller servings of what you have been eating to get to this stage in the first place.

A lot of people have has lots of success with the South Beach phase 2 food plan. The head Endocrinologist at Piedmont in Ga. recommends to his patients to use the South Beach and he himself being diabetic is on it and has insisted his staff use it as well.

It is a very sensible plan

Start a walking program. Walk as fast as you can for an hour every day. When this gets to be easy, make it twice a day. Walking is very very good exercise. It helps most people loose weight, gain control of glucose numbers, gain better control of blood pressure, and some say it even lowers LDL cholesterol. I don’t know but it sure makes me feel better and able to handle the day!

adding a website for you to read:

Question by groovy_girl_30: I’ve just started the diabetic exchange diet and I’m wondering how to count exchanges of pre-packaged foods.?
When on Weight Watchers, they had a calculator you could purchase that when input with calories, fat and fiber grams would tell you the amount of ”points” each food was valued. Does anyone know if there is any sort of calculator similar to this for determining the exchange values of packages foods, such as the 100 calorie snacks, for example? Any help will be much appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by Miz Lamb
I followed the exchange diet for many years trying to ward off the diagnosis of diabetes. It does NOT work! It contains the same amount of grams of carb as a normal food plan does.

http://www.nutritiondata.com has the calculator you are looking for and most packaged foods are in their data banks.

I recommend you go to http://www.mendosa.com for the Glycemic Index and choose from medium to low GI foods. They also have a huge number of packaged foods in the data bank.

You can go back to WW for good nutrition for your diabetes as well. Some people do fine on their plan.

Answer by mama bear
Very low in carbohydrates…especially any refined sugar, rice, potatoes, and white flour. You should probably buy Dr. Bernstein’s book…Diabetes Solutions, as that will give you the best indications about what you should eat. Warning, he’s very strict though. I myself add certain things that seem to have limited consequences, like blueberries, small portions of brown rice and whole wheat pasta, tomatoes, certain high fiber/relatively low carb cereals, Splenda sweetened cranberry and grapefruit juices, and even dark chocolate.

Question by BLUE FIRE FAIRY: Gastric Bypass patient 4-5 years out, anemic, diabetic diet?
my mom had gastric bypass 4-5 years ago, and didn’t take enough protein supplements. She is now severely anemic, and diabetic to top it off. a couple of days ago she was in the hospital being given blood, her iron was so low. Before that she was throwing up uncontrollably, and became malnutritioned because of it. She was released while on a liquid diet, being told that she needed to eat real food. however, as a result of having gastric bypass( where you aren’t supposed to intake a lot of sugar) she cant have sugar, but her diabetes demands she intake sugar. she cant eat real food without losing it, so she’s forced to eat soft stuff, like tapioca and jello. However, her stomach started cramping from not intaking food, and now she’s back to taking her anti-nausea and anti-stomach spasm medicine. any suggestions on any food to eat that wont raise her blood sugar too high, but is the consistency of tapioca or pudding?
she IS diabetic. was before the surgery, is now. Thought i’d clear that up.

Question by LW: If you have pcos should you follow a diabetic diet?
A friend of mine has pcos and she is unsure of what to eat.

Her Doctor told her she needed to lose at least 20lb to ‘ease her symptoms’.
(She is overweight and does struggle with ‘normal’ diets.)

She read that people with pcos should follow a diabetic diet to prevent type 2 diabetes, which is apparently common with pcos.

Can anyone offer any advice or information as I am not too knowledgeable on this topic and my friend doesn’t want to go back to the doctors to ask such a minor question.

Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by airforcerocks06
A diabetic diet is a good place to start, I have type 1 diabetes and watch my carbs. You might try having her go to Calorieking.com there are places online that can give you a reasoable calorie or carbohydrate intake depending on your weight now, and what you want it to be. Mainly the dietabetic diet is just eating healthy and potion control. Knowing what you eat makes a big difference.

Question by cleopatra: Can a diabetic safely eat a vegetarian diet? Details?
I’m mildly diabetic (I’m one of the ones who should “watch it” before it becomes a bigger problem) and I wonder if it is safe for me to become a vegetarian.

I was a vegan for about 6 mos. and I lost an alarming amount of weight (I’m already small), so I don’t want to be a vegan again, but I still don’t want to eat meat for ethical reasons.

All of the diets for diabetics say to eat only nutritionally dense carbs and pack on the protein and good fats (like olive oil, seeds, legumes). But for a vegatarian diet, it seems almost the opposite. Is it possible for a diabetic to consume enough protein on a veggie diet to stay healthy? It seems I would have to eat large amounts of beans, legumes = starches= sugars that I’m not allowed to have.

Are you (or do you know) a vegetarian diabetic? Can you help me, please? Thanks.
I found this from eatright.org (Amer. Diatetics Assoc.): “Vegetarian diets can meet guidelines for the treatment of diabetes and some research suggests that diets that are more plant-based reduce risk for type 2 diabetes.. Among the possible explanations for a protective effect of vegetarian diet are the lower BMI of vegetarians and higher fiber intake, both of which improve insulin sensitivity.”

Best answer:

Answer by a L a Y N a
Diabetics should be able to follow this diet. Instead of lean chicken protein you would eat beans. Check with your physician first.
