Does anyone have a reaction to sugary foods but does not test positive for diabetes?

Dawn L asked:

After I consume a lot of sugary foods/carbohydrates I get really dibilitating symptoms. (I have already been tested for diabetes and it was negative.) I get red in the face, my eyes get glazy, I feel out of it, and my body feels like it is shaking inside but not outside. Then the surges come where my heart feels irregular and beating fast and I literally feel like I am wired but tired. I get extreme thirst and frequent *********. Then I am “done” all I want to do is sit/lay down but I feel like flight or fight mode. I also get a heaviness and burning in my legs, arms, icey cold hands, a cold numbness in my forehead chest and eye lids. I have severe insomnia and can only fall asleep with Ambien. I have brain fog and hot surges where my blood pressure doesn’t change but my pulse races. Typically I run a real low pulse, 110/70 BP weight 135, 5’6″ age 46 and done with menopause two years ago. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on with me?

YOUR BODY MIGHT NOT RESPOND TO SUGARS WELL AND YOU MIGHT HAVE AN ALLERGIC REACTION OF SOME SORT. HOWEVER I AM NOT QUITE SURE WHAT! GOOD LUCK! AND DON’T WAIT TO LONG TO FIGURE IT OUT, IT MIGHT GET WORSE. DON’T HURT YOURSELF!

Obviously you must AVOID eating sugary foods. I am certainly no expert but this sounds like glucose intolerance, which is, according to my reading, a precursor to diabetes. I am surprised your doctor did not mention this – assuming you have been tested by a reputable medical practitioner?

If I were you I’d make an appointment at my local general hospital to see an ENDOCRINE specialist.

In the meantime, you clearly need to limit your intake of carbohydrates, not to exclude them from your diet altogether but to keep them to a reasonable proportion of your overall food intake.

You also need to consume a lot more green leafy vegetables. Don’t overdo the fruit as it contains a great deal of sugar. Some sugary vegetables are pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, corn on the cob, and sugar snap peas – you should only eat these in moderation.

If I were you I’d get a dietitian to advise me in detail about what and how much to eat.

Gentle daily exercise can’t hurt either.

    Good luck.
