Can you diagnose diabetes without fasting? ?

bankbreakergrl asked:

I have hypoglycemia and can’t fast for 3 hours since I have really bad hypo. Is there another way to test without having to fast? I heard I should get tested as hypo could turn into diabetes and I have been thirsty alot.

They can do something called a Random Blood sugar. This is done when you have eaten. This shows how your body is able to handle the sugars that you’re putting into your body.

usually fasting is the first and easiest. if your Dr orders this then ask for a prescription for the test and go first thing in the morning right when you wake up. otherwise there is the Glucose Tolerance test where you go in and they check your sugar level then they have you drink a high sugar drink and then they repeatedly test your blood to see how your body handles it. those are the only ways i know of to truly diagnose Diabetes. random glucose checks aren’t accurate because they can not take into account what you have eaten. So unless your levels are Sky high they can’t say for sure that you have Diabetes.

Diabetes is associated with a lack of insulin or a lack of response to insulin. If you have hypo, that is suggestive of low blood glucose levels which is not indicative of diabetes. Diabetes presents with HIGH blood sugar which would be a “hyper” (hyperglycemia). Diabetics have “hypos” only because of their insulin, if they take too much or haven’t eaten properly that day.

If you are constantly hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) this is not indicative of diabetes (unless of course your self-administering insulin). How do you know you have hypoglycemia? Have you been measuring your blood glucose? What levels are you reading?

Either way, your hypoglycemia should be investigated.

A random blood sugar test measures your blood sugar at any point in time, not necessarily a certain amount of time after a meal, snack or beverage.

A normal random blood sugar level hasn’t been clearly defined. However, even if you’ve recently eaten and your blood sugar level is at its peak, your random blood sugar level shouldn’t be higher than 200 mg/dL.

If your random blood sugar level is higher than 140 mg/dL but lower than 200 mg/dL, you may have prediabetes.

A random blood sugar level higher than 200 mg/dL suggests either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Remember, your blood sugar level alone isn’t enough to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Your doctor may do other tests to determine which type of diabetes you have.

If you have hypoglycemia then diabetes isn’t a problem. Diabetes is HYPERglycemia.
It is also important to understand that hypoglycemia is a symptom of a condition, it is not a disease or condition itself. If you have really bad hypoglycemia for some reason, you need to see a endocrinologist to help diagnose what is going wrong in your body and determine how to treat it.
Also, and HbA1C test can be done without testing, this will tell the doctor what your average glucose level has been for the past three months.

The best test to take is called A1C. This test measures the AVERAGE blood sugar over the last 90 days. You DO NOT have to fast to take this test.

Hypoglycemia does not normally turn into diabetes. The two problems are exactly opposite of each other. Diabetes is HIGH blood sugar; Hypopglecymeia is LOW blood sugar. Diabetes is caused by not enough insulin production in the body. Hypoglycemia is [usually] caused by a poor diet.

HOWEVER, a diabetic who is being treated will often have hypoglycemic attacks if they do not control their diet with respect to their medications. This is especially true if the patient is taking insulin.

Still, the A1C test will ALSO show if you are hypoglycemic or not, too.

    Test 2 hours after eating.
Eat balanced meals with whole grains at regular times. Whole grains turn into sugar slower over a longer period of time and will help with lows. Lose the sugar.
